That Indispensable Thing Called Brollie

When in London or in Hamburg you can rarely do without one. Alas, the winds over here won’t let you enjoy one for long. The elements must be in league with the owners of umbrella shops!

This shop is called Hackett London, but happens to be in Hamburg. I was intrigued by the black doorknobs – or handles? Bars? Whatever. And why, pray, isn’t the brass knob shaped like a bowler hat?

I had to wait in a long queue consisting of only one (me), camera ready, but so many people decided to rush past the open door, noticed me and my intention, stopped short for a few seconds to stare inside the shop. Obviously afraid to miss something important going on in there…

Two black brollies, one on either side of the open door. Not all that spectactular for passersby (except me, of course, the hunter of funny doors).

Some time ago I forgot my brollie at an American colleague’s house and went back to fetch it. She had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. I explained that it was British for umbrella, but she thought I’d just made it up. I told her to ask her husband about it – a Londoner!
