Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Whatchamacallits on Cornish Roofs?

Private Blog – ad-free – award-free – non-commercial

chapel-street-penzanceornament-dach-giebelHa! This is my chance to find out what those reddish thingummies on the roofs are for?

Any suggestions very welcome! 🙂

Are they architectural features typical for Cornwall?

Are they supposed to fend off evil spirits?

Are they just waves?

The mind boggles…

P. S.:

Say not the trouble nought availeth!

Heureka – just now! After looking for them again and again over the years I hit on the correct search words, roof + ornaments + Penzance.

So they’re called finials. Although I found so many images of houses in Chapel Street, no photographer was interested in these things on the roofs. They must have been so used to the sight that they didn’t even notice them. Finials, finials, finials. And of course I misread finals at first.

Thank you, Norm 2.0, for creating this photochallenge for door-lovers around the world. 🙂

Let’s stay awhile in Penzance of pirate fame …

Last week I presented The Egyptian House, today let’s have a close look at Captain Cutter’s door. Feel tempted?

If not, the back entrance might be more to your liking…
