Alter Schwede!

Part of Norm 2.0’s photo challenge Thursday Doors.

Thank you for visiting.

Why *Old Swede*? Alter Schwede! is an exclamation of surprise or dismay like Great Scott! While I can’t imagine Sir Walter Scott ever made it to Wismar, this town in the North of Germany was often visited by Swedes in the past and probably still is.

Zollenspieker With the World’s Smallest Diner

Thank you for visiting! 🙂

This is part of Cee’s black and white photo challenge letter y or z.

Very few words in my language start with a y, but it`s very rich in z-words. Zeitgeist and Zeppelin come to mind, but unfortunately I don’t seem to have taken any pictures of them lately. Nor can I present you with a portrait of my Zahnarzt (dentist), which is probably not a very popular word, anyway.

What about Zollenspieker though? It’s the name of a wildlife reserve. Near the ferry that will take you to the other side of the River Elbe you might want to have a four course meal with up to three friends and enjoy the view. In the olden days the wooden hut was used as a flood marker, Pegel, so the official name of the world`s smallest restaurant is Zollenspieker Pegelhäuschen. Isn’t it cute?

More photos of Zollenspieker wildlife in colour.

I just read that Zollenspieker used to be called Yselinge – yippee! This means I killed two birds with one stone! (What a terrible idiom – why should I want to kill even one?)
