Tor und Tür – Beware!

Opening gate and door is an idiom in my language, warning you not to encourage something dangerous to approach you. Admittedly, the alliteration of Tor and Tür might have made it easy to remember.

Sometimes the danger lurks inside or is supposed to frighten trespassers away. Or is there really always a bloodthirsty watchdog to justify a yellow cave canem sign? By the way, I can’t remember when I last read the Latin version, perhaps houseowners know by now that burglars can’t always be expected to read foreign languages. Not even German in most cases, so a dog’s head on the sign might do the trick instead.

This gate with the garish warning sign took me by surprise. While I’m not afraid of dogs in general, wild horses wouldn’t have dragged me into this forsaken garden. I was curious enough, though, to peek into that big white bag. I hoped to spot the proverbial sleeping dogs lying in there, but it was empty… Could it be metaphorical?

Warnung vor dem HundBelieve it nor not, this example of architectural Shabby Chic (tada!) is in a very well-to-do neighbourhood. The doors reserved for humans and cars are much more pleasant to look at.

Porta Gallica – Thursday Doors

Why is this a Gallican door? Because… Porta omnis divisa est in partes tres. And why can I only present this door in three parts, top, central and bottom part? Because of road works it wasn’t possible to take a shot from a reasonable distance. (Aside: Caesar, I really didn’t like your book on that war – I found it utterly boring and sided with your enemies! Too much bragging for my taste. You were a terrible narcissist and Brutus an honourable man.)

World Heritage House Wismar

Trust me, you don’t even want to know what the house next door (without a door even) looks like.

Just don’t look any further then, because I’ll show it for contrast.

Thursday Doors – Farmhouse Museum

Part of Norm 2.0’s photo challenge Thursday Doors. Thank you for visiting!

high_chair

Farmhouse museum with exhibits dating back to the year 1809.

When I took this shot, the doors weren’t really in the centre of attraction, so you only see part of them.

I was fascinated by the high chair and the tile stove, but noticed the pattern on the first door repeating the one from the heater.
