Alter Schwede!

Thank you for visiting.

Why *Old Swede*? Alter Schwede! is an exclamation of surprise or dismay like Great Scott! While I can’t imagine Sir Walter Scott ever made it to Wismar, this town in the North of Germany was often visited by Swedes in the past and probably still is.

Hey, big spender…

BTW: I really appreciate your „likes“ and comments – don’t we all? But I often wonder why there are always so many more readers on this blog than bloggers liking or commenting on it? Are they all blogspot users? I find I’m unable to leave „likes“ on Blogspot.

Hopefully, there’s some money left for the taxman? This is a side door of a former building of the Finanzdeputation (Inland Revenue) in ABC-Straße. Thirteen had better be your lucky number! The little guy on top is supposed to be young Hermes (created by Richard Kuöhl). Did he want to cash in?

That Indispensable Thing Called Brollie

When in London or in Hamburg you can rarely do without one. Alas, the winds over here won’t let you enjoy one for long. The elements must be in league with the owners of umbrella shops!

This shop is called Hackett London, but happens to be in Hamburg. I was intrigued by the black doorknobs – or handles? Bars? Whatever. And why, pray, isn’t the brass knob shaped like a bowler hat?

I had to wait in a long queue consisting of only one (me), camera ready, but so many people decided to rush past the open door, noticed me and my intention, stopped short for a few seconds to stare inside the shop. Obviously afraid to miss something important going on in there…

Two black brollies, one on either side of the open door. Not all that spectactular for passersby (except me, of course, the hunter of funny doors).

Some time ago I forgot my brollie at an American colleague’s house and went back to fetch it. She had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. I explained that it was British for umbrella, but she thought I’d just made it up. I told her to ask her husband about it – a Londoner!
