I often wonder who created the first brickwork patterns. When translating a coffeetable book on country style I came to understand that there are plenty of different ways to arrange them and each one has a term of its own. It proved difficult to find out the vocabulary, because the Internet was still a twinkle in the nerds‘ eyes. Fortunately a neighbour (bricklayer) was able to ask his employer and help me to identify the patterns from the images in my book. Anyway, the only term I was familiar with was very similar in English and German, herringbone and Fischgrät.
